Yimbala, Cape York
Laura, Cape York
The gathering (Yimbala) at the sacred grounds of Ang-Gnarra is one of the largest events for of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia.
During the bi-annual Laura dance festival the focus is as much on the passing down of traditions and respect for country to new generations of kids as it is sharing the world’s oldest living culture with outsiders.
The dances performed here are not watered down shows for tourists; rather a display of diversity and strength of culture that by all reports is unmatched at any such event around Australia. For three days the music played, kids and adults danced, sung and performed with an infectious energy that cut through the dust and heat of Laura’s sacred grounds.
